New Music Tuesday: Death Cab for Cutie - Codes & Keys

I really like this band. The have been around for quite awhile now, but I only really got introduced, and into them with their "Plans" album, which was 2 albums before this one. Their sound is a little folksy, a little rock and a little romantic. The lead singer has really mastered the art of expression of emotion through lyrics, really making you feel the message of his songs. This album isn't too much of a deviation from their last album, Narrow Stairs, although what I did notice is that there is less guitar and more keyboard on this one. The songs also seem to be of a happier theme than the previous two albums, that seemed to deal a lot with depression, lost love and death. I would definitely recommend this album, I have listened to it a couple times now and it is growing on me just like the last ones and will probably be one of my favorites for the year.

Day 44: Turbonegro - Apocalypse Dudes

So, I think that I am pretty tolerant and opened minded when it comes to music. I'll listen to about anything once and can tolerate profanity in songs to a certain extent. I can't take songs being offensive or profanity in songs just for the sake of profanity. After about 2 songs off this album I had learned 2 things. 1. I don't get punk rock in any form, it all sounds the same and 2. these guys were trying to be offensive just for the sake of being offensive. This album was pretty much crap that doesn't even deserve a review let alone to be in the 1001. Do yourself a favor and skip this one, it's not worth your time. 0/5

Day 43: The Cure - Pornography

There are three albums that The Cure feels are their definitive albums, Pornography (1982), Disintegration (1989), and Bloodflowers (2000). In fact they played a series of concerts in 2002 where they played all three albums in order and to quote Robert Smith  "The albums Pornography, Disintegration and Bloodflowers are inextricably linked in so many ways, and the realization of this Trilogy show is one of the highlights of my time in The Cure."

I am a huge Cure fan. Anyone that knows me knows this, but I am a much bigger fan of their albums from The Head on the Door and later. In fact, while there are some great songs on Pornography, and I can listen to, and love them all individually, I struggle to listen to the whole album from beginning to end. It is just way too dark and depressing to me, and by the end of it I want to beat some goths :) 4/5

Day 42: Culture Club - Colour by Numbers

I remember my parents buying this album when it came out and I played the hell out of it. I loved it. It was was my real first exposure to 80s pop, a genre that I still love to this day. There isn't much better than 80s music. All the songs are amazing with Boy George's signature voice tearing it up like only he can. It was a real shame that subsequent albums didn't really hit and, due to George's drug problems Culture Club broke up 3 years after this album. 5/5

Day 41: Weather Report - Heavy Weather

Lets get this out of the way first, who names their band Weather Report? That has to be one of the dumbest names for a band that I have ever heard.

I actually kind of liked this album. I had to Google what genre of music they are, which, by the way, is Jazz Fusion. In essence that is jazz mixed with funk/r & b. So besides it being a instrumental album, it was really cool. It is no surprise to me now that I liked it because I would consider some of Prince's music to be jazz fusion. It's just really cool, fun music to listen too, music that you can get into, just chill out to. I liked it. 4/5 -1 only because it is instrumental.

Day 40: Iggy Pop - Lust for Life

Oh boy, more punk. I was less than enthusiastic when it came to listening to this album especially when I had to listen to the PiL album last time, but I was pleasantly surprised. By that I mean it didn't make me want to blow out my eardrums. It was however what I expect a typical Iggy Pop album to sound like. He is a horrible singer (anyone see him on Idol this season?), and he is off the wall weird. The bottom line is this is a late 70s punk album. If you like that type of music this is probably right up your alley, if not there isn't much here that would convert you to this type of music. 2/5

U2 Salt Lake City 5/24/11

Sorry no album post yesterday, was a little busy attending an amazing concert. Originally scheduled for June 3/10 it was delayed almost a year when Bono had to have back surgery, and boy, oh boy was it worth the wait. U2 is the baddest group of rockers on the planet. They know how to put on a show like no one else can match. Everything about it was designed to entertain and be over the top on all levels. From the stage to the lighting and sound system to the performance itself, nothing was left out. Bono knows how to involve the crowd and they performed songs that were from their whole catalog to include both new fans and old. If you ever have the chance to see these guys slap down the money, you will not be disappointed.

Day 39: Public Image Ltd - Metal Box

I don't even know where to begin with this album. It was absolutely horrible, crap in it's purest form. The music was more like disconnected notes strung together to make songs, that assault your ears. The singer sounds like he is singing with marbles in his mouth, making parts of the songs unintelligible. The lyrics make little sense, leaving you bewildered as to what this band is trying to say. This is punk at it's worst, or at it's best depending on your point of view. 0/5

Day 38: Aerosmith - Pump

I have quite a bit of Aerosmith on my Ipod, ranging their entire career, and I have to say that out of all their albums I think this was, and still is, their best. Everything about it rocks. Steven Tyler is a master at writing lyrics and has an amazing voice to boot, he can really hit the higher register, like no one else can. The subject matter of the songs, of course, is mostly about rock star type stuff, but that's what makes them great, they are fun, witty and great to sing along to.
I had tickets to see Aerosmith when they were touring to support this album, but had a "falling" out with the person I was to go with, and gave away the tickets. Wish I would have gone anyways, I'm sure it was an awesome show. 5/5

Day 37: Richard Hawley - Coles Corner

This album was pretty good, but I was a little confused at who Richard Hawley is. The first couple tracks he is kind of like a really cool Frank Sinatra throwback sound, all kind of slow and jazzy. Then the rest of the album kind of reminds me of a bit of Chris Isaac mixed with Johnny Cash mixed with Randy Travis, with the songs having more of a country twang to them. Parts of the album were really long and slow and at other times a bit more lively, but never really rocking. I think country music fans would like this album more than any other type of genre. I would have like it more if it had been a bit more consistent on style and direction. 3/5

Day 36: Def Leppard - Hysteria

Another album of the 1001 that I have listened to a zillion times and absolutely love. To say this album was huge is a massive understatement. Every track on the album could have been a hit single, and in fact 7 of the 12 tracks were released as radio singles, 4 reaching top 10 status and 1 reaching #1 on the charts. The album has sold 20 million copies worldwide and reached #1 on the billboard 200, where it remained on the charts for 96 weeks.
The reason for the albums mass appeal and popularity is that it is a very well polished and produced rock album. It is solid all the way around. The music and lyrics are perfect rock songs. Everything just clicks, and kicks, on this album. 5/5

Sorry for the reposts

The 3 posts following this post are re-posts from the past. Something went wonky with the blog website and they were removed from my blog and put into "draft" status. I wanted to re-post them just so that all prior posts are currently on the blog. Sorry for the confusion.

New Feature - Song of the Day (SoTD)

When I'm not listened to the album of the day for this blog I usually throw my Ipod on random and have music playing all the time. So I thought what I'd do is choose one random song, that pops up each day, that catches my fancy depending on my mood at the time and post it here. No commentary, no critique, just the song. Hopefully it will re-introduce you to a song you haven't heard in a long time or introduce you to new music. Either way more music is always a good thing.

Muse - The Resistance Tour - Live

A few months back my sons and I went to the Muse concert when it landed in Salt Lake. It was an amazing show by an amazing band. Today I was looking through my bookmarks on my computer and found a link to the entire show, but filmed in Seattle. So, I thought I would share :)

Muse live in Seattle

What the hell is this??

I am a big New Order fan, so imagine my surprise when I read today that George Michael had re-done one of their greatest songs, "True Faith" with all proceeds going to Comic Relief, whatever that is. This will be great, a new version of a song I love, by someone who can really sing. Boy was I wrong. I can see why the proceeds are going to Comic Relief, cause this is a horrible horrible joke.

Why did he Auto-tune his voice? He has an amazing voice.

Day 35: Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden

The self-titled album by Iron Maiden was their first album, released in 1980. It was really refreshing to hear some really raw, down to the basics, heavy metal again. The sound is so unfinished and spectacular, compared to their later albums which were much more heavily produced and polished. This album is also the 1st and only album before they got their current singer Bruce Dickinson, and while the singer for this album was o.k., the band definitely is better with Dickinson. Just listening to the album you can hear why these guys have been so influential to future metal bands, they really paved the way for this genre.

Day 34: Husker Du - Warehouse

I have to admit this is one of the few bands that I have never heard of and know absolutely nothing about, so I did a bit of Google research to find out a bit more about them. Turns out they were a alternative/punk band that formed in 80 and broke up in 87. They released 7 albums during that time, impressive, and this album being the last, breaking up during touring to support it.
I thought it was a pretty decent album overall. A bit long, 20 songs in all, and by the end I had pretty much had my fill of Husker Du. Apparently they were quite big on the college scene/circuit, but never breaking it big into the main stream. I can see why after hearing them. They were kind of a generic punk band not really differing too much from a lot of other bands before or after them. For those that really like this type of music I can see why they would really love this album, but for me, a guy who likes their punk in small doses, I don't think I would ever listen to it again. 2/5

Day 33: Radiohead - The Bends

I have been stressing out about having to write a review of this album. You see, I love a lot of different music and a lot of different bands, but there are only 3 bands that I put on a pedestal over and above all others; Blue October, The Cure, and Radiohead. To me these three bands are pure genius. For that reason I don't feel, as a mere mortal, like I have the ability to describe Radiohead albums to others.
Radiohead is a very polarizing band. Most people that I have talked to either LOVE or HATE Radiohead, there doesn't seem to be a lot of middle ground. That is because you can't be a casual listener of their music, you have to be actively involved in it. Thom York and the band put so many subtleties and intricacies into their songs that it requires effort to appreciate their music. But once you do, it is pure heaven.
The Bends, in my opinion, is the best of the Radiohead albums and comes as close to perfect as I think any album can come, with most of their other albums right there with it. The worst song on the album, and for that matter the worst Radiohead song, is still better than any other artist could ever dream of making, with the exception of Robert Smith I guess.
If you love music, you need to have this album, and really listen to it, to discover how in depth and amazing it really is. 5/5

I'm tempted to put a video up for each song of the album but that would be just silly, so I'll limit myself to three. :) Enjoy!

Day 32: Love - Forever Changes

This album, to me, was like a soundtrack to a musical. A hippie musical, but a musical none the less. I could see someone taking these songs and writing a story around them and running it on Broadway, and it would actually be pretty good. I liked a lot of the songs, even though they were a little psychedelic. They were upbeat and pretty fun to listen to and I can see why this album would have been really popular back in the late 60s when it was released. 3/5

Day 31: Paul McCartney & WIngs - Band on the Run

I am not a Beatles fan in any way. I have tried to listen to them in the past, thinking that everyone should be a fan, since they are so highly regarded, but I just can't do it. So I was less than excited to have to listen to this album. It was really quite good however. It wasn't like the Beatles at all. It was way more rock sounding, and the lyrics are really catchy. There was probably 5 of the songs which I had heard in the past, just not realizing it was Paul McCartney that was singing them, who, in my opinion, is a better singer than John Lennon. The album was very catchy and fun to listen to, definitely something I would listen to again. 5/5

Day 30: Bee Gees - Odessa

When I think Bee Gees, I think disco. In my mind they are the definition of disco, this album was not disco. This album was boring. The songs are slow, long and drawn out. The Lyrics really left something to be desired and at 16 tracks I got to the point where I just wanted it to end. Unless you are having trouble going to sleep, I don't recommend listening to this never-ending bore-fest. 1/5

SoTD Blue October - The Chills

Day 29: MUSE - Black Holes & Revelations

Doing some catch up for blogger being down.

I liked MUSE before this album, but this is the one that made me really love their music. This album, like their others, is really more like a rock opera with political overtones. All of the songs really flow from one to the next giving an overall "feel" to each album. On top of that Matt Bellamy maybe one of the top 2 or 3 guitar players in the world. His ability to make an electric guitar do so many different things is spectacular.
This is an album that needs to be played from beginning to end, on full volume.5/5

Day 28: U2 - Achtung Baby

In 12 days my wife and I will be going to our first U2 concert. It is the one band that she has said that if she ever had the chance to see she was going to, no matter what. So it is fitting that I would be listening to this album at this time.
After less than great reviews of Rattle and Hum by critics and fans, U2 set out to re-invent themselves. Achtung Baby is the 1st of three albums in the process, the other two being Zooropa and Pop. In my opinion, and many others Achtung Baby turned out to be one of their best albums ever. It is full of hit songs, in fact each song on the album could easily have been a radio hit if released. It is more of a pop/industrial style album for U2 and really is completely perfect. This album definitely put U2 back on the path to being the biggest band in the world, a title that they will probably hold until they day they stop making music. 5/5
U2 best song, and quite possibly one of the greatest songs ever written.

My favorite song from the album.

Day 27: Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow

So Blogger, the hosting website that I run this blog through, has been down for the last couple days, and for some reason when it came back up my previous post for this album is gone.

I don't remember exactly what I said word for word but it was along the lines of this album sucked. I am not into psychedelic hippie music at all, and this album is that at it's finest. It was just way too weird for me. The songs didn't flow well, it was just a mess. 1/5

Day 26: Billie Holiday - Lady in Satin

I have said it before and I'll say it again, I am really starting to get into these older 50s albums. They are sooo good. I think what I am enjoying about them is that they are so different and original. I can listen to them and really see the influence they have on modern music. Billie Holiday was no different. She paved the way for female singers today. Without her there is no Nora Jones.  She didn't have an amazing voice, from the one album I listened to, it was really rough and raw, but also unique and you can tell that she put a lot of emotion into every song.
Lady in Satin was her last album. The orchestral arrangements on the album are amazing, giving the album a relaxing tone to it. This is definitely a album you could put on after a long day at work, just crashing on the couch with the lights off, unwinding.
Billie died not long after completing the album, at the age of 44, from liver and heart disease, penniless, and a drug addict.  4/5 for paving the way for all other female singers.

New Music Tuesday: Blue October - Ugly Side an Acoustic Evening With ...

O.k. so besides the Blue October album of new material coming out this summer, I was most excited about this CD releasing today. Those that know me know that I absolutely love Blue October. I could write a huge post just about the band and how amazing their music and concerts are. I could write about how I have seen them 3 times in the last year and met the band each time, and that they are really down to earth normal guys. I could write about how their songs are so real and how so many people connect with the messages and emotion of the songs, but I digress.
The point of this post is to let everyone know about their new acoustic CD. I didn't get a chance to see them when they were doing their last acoustic tour, the one in which the album was recorded, and I don't think I will get a chance to see them while they are one tour to support this album, but only because they aren't coming to Salt Lake. So this album is going to have to be a adequate substitute. I have listened to it a couple times now and it is really good. For Blue fans you know the songs so this is an amazing new way to hear them. All of the songs really lend themselves to being played acoustic, and in fact I think some of them actually convey more of their emotion acoustically. As always Justin is amazing live and you can really hear the passion for the songs when he sings them. Anyone that is a fan of music do yourself a favor and give Blue October a listen. I would recommend starting with the album "Foiled" and is was commercially most successful and then moving on to their other album. I can say without hesitation that there isn't a single song on any of their albums that I don't think is better than pretty much any song out there. 6/5 cause holds me over till new material is released.

Listen to these to songs. I dare you to tell me they don't give you goosebumps.

Day 25: R.E.M - Automatic for the People

I have quite a bit of REM on my Ipod but for some reason they are rarely a band that I think of listening to if I am just randomly picking an album. Most of the albums I really like, and I think that REM is actually a really good band. According to a poll conducted of REM fans, this album is actually ranked as their best album to date. I would say it is probably top 3 for me with Monster and New Adventures in Hi-Fi a little better in my opinion. Automatic does have a lot of really great songs on it though. What really sets REM, and Michael Stipe specifically, apart is the song writing. He has definitely mastered the art of taking random thoughts and ideas and turning them into songs. I read somewhere one that the reason that REM doesn't print their lyrics in their CD booklets is because then people would realize how incoherent and confusing they are. I'm not sure if that is true but I could see where it could be.
What I love about Automatic specifically is the emotion that is in the songs. Drive, Everybody Hurts and Man on the moon are perfect examples of this and are amazing songs. If you have never heard this album before from start to finish I would definitely recommend it. I have a feel I might be listening to some more REM in the near future. 5/5 for turning ADD thoughts into songs

Day 24: Ray Charles - The Genius of Ray Charles

This album was really good. It has a wonderfully easy jazzy/blues/big band sound to it. Mr. Charles could really play the piano and his voice has that lower raspy type sound to it which really goes with the music he was making. It is a perfect album for just kicking back and relaxing.
I'm not sure if it is because I'm getting older or if it is because I am trying to be more open minded towards different types of music listening to these, but I am really starting to dig the older 50s and 60s music.

5/5 for an awesome jazz/blues album that makes you forget the cares of the world

BTW Rolling Stone named Charles number 10 on their list of "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" in 2004, and number two on their November 2008 list of "100 Greatest Singers of All Time".

Day 23: Morrissey - You are the Quarry

I only have one Morrissey song on my Ipod, November Spawned a Monster. It's an amazing song that I think everyone should here. After hearing this album, however, I think there is a good reason I only have the one song.
I really didn't like it much at all. Morrissey definitely has a very unique voice that takes some getting use to, and his song writing is kind of unconventional in style. He also seems to have some deep rooted issues that he is trying to work out cause most of the album he is pissed off or depressed. Not that that is a bad thing, I love The Cure.
Overall I wouldn't say it was terrible but just a little too odd for me. It didn't flow very well, the lyrics weren't all that great and it was too self absorbed for my taste. 2/5

I think "How can anybody possibly know how I feel" is the best example of the whole album

Day 22: The Cult - Electric

Yes, Yes, Yes. I LOVE this album. In fact, probably one of my all-time favorites. To me it is an example of a classic rock album. All of the songs are awesome, in your face rock songs. Many people don't know, however, that this album was actually recorded twice. The album was originally recorded and named "Peace". The band was unhappy with the sound of the album, fired the producer, and scrapped the album. For Electric they hired Rick Rubin to produce and re-recorded all of the tracks. Most of the songs from "Peace" made it on to Electric, others were added, and a couple the tracks from Peace, Zap City for example, were later released as B-sides to singles from Electric. If you can find a copy of Peace, hard but not impossible, it is definitely worth getting. I like it almost as much as Electric, especially the 1st version of "Peace Dog".

Unfortunately The Cult has been more miss than hit with their albums. Electric and Sonic Temple are pretty much the only bright spots of their career.

5/5 for making pretty much a perfect rock classic

Day 21: Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams

I think, if I'm not mistaken, that my sister had this album as a teen and listened to it quite a lot. At the time I don't recall liking it all that much, and if I am being honest I still wouldn't add it to my music collection. It was kind of fun however to revisit it and I can say that I do appreciate it more now. There are quite a few songs on the album that are quite good, and of course there is the monster 80s hit "Sweet Dreams". Annie Lennox's voice is very captivating and haunting in a way. She can really tell a story and pull you in when she sings. I would say that this album definitely has it's place in 80s music history and belongs on this list.
Better song than Sweet Dreams in my opinion

3.5/5 for a classic 80s album

Day 20: Spirit - Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus

I kind of enjoyed this album. The beginning was really pretty good, then the middle was just kind of weird, then the end was good again. It sounded like, what I would think a typical early 70s album should sound like. A little psychedelic, little disco-ish, and a little drug inspired. Being twelve tracks on the album I assume each one of them is one of Dr. Sardonicus's dreams, but they didn't really play out any type of theme to the album, is that was Spirit's intention. Overall, not being a big fan of 70s style music, I was worth a listen but not an album that I would ever listen too again.

2/5 for being a little bit too weird.

New Music Tuesday

New feature to the blog time! For those of you that don't know, Tuesday is typically the day that record companies and bands release new music. So along that thinking I am going to review new music as it comes out. Now I may do this every Tuesday, or I might skip one here and there, depending on what is released.

There has been a few albums released in the past couple weeks that I have been interested in so for this post I am going to do a bit of catch up by talking about a couple of them, from oldest to most recent release.

1. Foo Fighters - Wasting Light. I love the Foo Fighters. I love pretty much everything that they have ever done. To me they are a classic rock and roll band, that kicks some serious ass. The last couple albums, before Wasting Light, I have to admit have been minor disappointments. They lacked something, they kind of mellowed out a bit too much for me. It was was like the Foo Fighters had lost their way. Well believe me they are definitely back in full force for this album. From the opening chord to the last beat, it's amazing. All of the songs are amazing, hard hitting rock anthems, that will probably make Wasting Light the best Foo Fighters album to date. It is apparent that Dave Grohl still has some issues surrounding Kurt Cobain's suicide and the end of Nirvana, that he decides to explore on this album. He decides to lets loose his anger and I'm glad he does, cause it makes for some really heartfelt songs like "I Should have Known". Overall this album easily has 5 or 6 potential big radio hits like "Bridge Burning", "Rope", "Dear Rosemary", and my favorite "Arlandria". If you are already a Foo Fighters Fan or just want to get an amazing rock album, pick up Wasting Light, you won't be disappointed. 5/5

2. Augustana - Augustana. Augustana has been becoming one of my favorite bands for a few years now. Their last album, Can't Love, Can't Hurt, was just amazing. In fact, one of the tracks from that album, "Dust" is probably on my list of top 10 favorite songs of all time. This album was a slight disappointment though. It doesn't have an sure fire hits on it like Can't Love, but it still is very good. However, if you like really good lyrics and melodies in your music then you will love this band because that is what they excel at. Writing songs that really bring you in while you listen to them. 4/5
3. Beastie Boys - Hot Sauce Committee Part 2. Just released yesterday, this is the 1st Beasties album in seven years (they released an instrumental album, The Mix-up, in 2009). As I said in a previous post when I listened to Licensed to Ill, as part of the 1001, I really like the Beastie Boys, and Licensed is one of my favorite albums of all time. This album however is a Hot Mess. It is really sloppily produced and really doesn't seem to be going anywhere. The interlude songs are just dumb and besides "Make Some Noise" nothing really sounds like classic Beastie boy material. For fans of the boys I would say skip this one, as it will probably go down as their worst album. Hopefully when they release Hot Sauce Committee Part 1, yes part 2 was before part 1, it will be a return to form for them. 1/5

Great Video btw. Bonus points if you can name all the stars in it.

Next Tuesday Blue October releases "Ugly side" a live album from their last acoustic tour. Can't Wait.

Day 19: UB40 - Signing Out

Reggae is really a fun genre of music and UB40 has to be one of the premier bands for this genre. The variety of instruments, horn arrangements and especially the steel drum give it such a unique sound that you just can't help but tap your feet to it. I thought that this album was pretty good. The songs all had more of a jamming feel to them than constructed songs, which I really liked.
4/5 gotta love the steel drums
