#868 Fat Boy Slim - You've Come a Long Way Baby

I liked a couple of songs on the album, the ones released as singles when it come out. Other than that it is another electronica album that kinda sounds like the other albums that I've listened to. I'm just not qualified in the genre to be able to determine what makes one album better than another.

#249 Gene Clark - White Light

Even if I don't really like an album I do enjoy reading the history of the artist, and one thing that I have noticed is that a lot of these artists and bands on the list are interconnected. Artists have played together in different bands and have been in multiple bands on the list. What I've come to believe is that if you are a musician and have talents either for writing music or lyrics or both you are going to keep doing it for your whole life. If one band isn't popular or if it falls apart there is something else that they start up or get involved with.

Gene Clark, for example, was a member of the Byrds, who also had David Crosby in it, who went on to be a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, who went on to have solo careers.

I didn't like the album. It is folk music and its one genre that I haven’t had much exposure to before listening to the 1001. I still haven't found anything in the genre that has changed my mind about it. Maybe it is still coming...

#151 Isaac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul

I like soul/funk, a lot. I'm pretty sure I have shared that in the past. Clocking in at 45 minutes and only 4 songs, it was bearable to listen to for the fact that is was a pretty good soul/funk album. Long drawn out bass and drum parts really made it a pleasure to listen to.

#401 Devo - Q: Are We Not Men? A: We are Devo!

There is value in some bands purely making quirky songs that are fun. The Violent Femmes, Dead Milkmen, Weird Al and others have made careers out of it. I would put Devo in this category. The have a gimmick to their style that they used to sell music. For those that are fans of Devo it works for them. Honestly I didn't think the album was very good.

#172 The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground

Lou Reed's band before going solo. I was kind of indifferent about it, it was just kind of blah.

"Candy Says" - I've heard this song, but not this version, somewhere before. Not sure where though

BTW the collaboration between Lou Reed and Metallica produced one of the big abomination in music ever - the album "Lulu". Just absolutely terrible!

New Music: Gord Downie - Introduce Yerself

It has been a little over a week since Gord Downie, singer for The Tragically Hip, died. Every Canadian knew it was going to happen, probably sooner than later, but it came as a surprise anyways, and it hurt. The band announced about 1-1/2 years ago that Gord had brain cancer, and then they proceeded to release their final album "Man Machine Poem" and plan a final across Canada tour, to give their fans what they wanted most, a chance to say thank you and goodbye.

I was introduced to The Hip when they released their third album "Fully Completely". I instantly was hooked and have been ever since. Throughout their career they have released 13 albums, some better than others but all of them completely Canadian. That was the bands gift to us, they made music that told us about ourselves, that celebrated what it means to be Canadian, but this post isn't about The Hip.

In between Hip albums, Gord Downie occasionally made a solo album, 6 in all. The last two "Secret Path" and "Introduce Yerself" were recorded since announcing that he had cancer. Now I have listened to all of his solo albums and they are very different than any Hip album, and I'll admit not really my style. I do, however, love that in his dying moments he wanted to accomplish two things:

With Secret Path, Gord wanted to bring attention to the Canadian Residential School System and more specifically to Chanie Wenjack, a young First Nations boy who died in 1966 while trying to escape from one of the schools.

“The residential school system harmed Indigenous children significantly by removing them from their families, depriving them of their ancestral languages, exposing many of them to physical and sexual abuse, and forcibly enfranchising them. Disconnected from their families and culture and forced to speak English or French, students who attended the residential school system often graduated unable to fit into either their communities or Canadian society. It ultimately proved successful in disrupting the transmission of Indigenous practices and beliefs across generations. The legacy of the system has been linked to an increased prevalence of post-traumatic stress, alcoholism, substance abuse, and suicide, which persist within Indigenous communities.”

I have been listening to this album, released today, all morning. Consisting of 23 songs, each one is dedicated to someone in Gord's life. Whether Gord was their son, brother, husband, father, band mate or friend, he chose this as his goodbye. I don't know who each song is about but hopefully whoever they are they know, and they know, like all Canadians, that Gord gave all that he had to his music, to his family and friends, to his country. He wanted us all to be entertained, but also to know a little bit more about our heritage and history, even if sometimes it is a little bit ugly.

So thank you Gord for giving us part of yerself. For holding Canada up to a light and showing both the great and the bad. Thank you for being a great example of a Canadian.

#680 Sinead O'Connor - I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got

I bought this album when it came out for one reason, the song "Nothing Compares 2 U" is written by Prince. I had heard the song and liked it, but I had not heard of Sinead or any of her other music or songs on the album. Luckily the album turned out to be pretty good and was worth the purchase, and it was good to listen to it again after a lot of years.

So this album turned out to be a cross of punk, country, rock, alternative and a little bit of Irish/Scottish type music. I liked some of the music but most of it I could have lived without.

#154 Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin might be the most famous 60's rock bands ever. They have sold so many albums and still have a huge following of fans. Even though they are that popular I had never listened to a full album prior to now. I'm not sure the reason why, there probably isn't a good reason other than I just never really knew anyone that was into them, so I guess just lack of exposure.

The album was really really good. A great example of some amazing classic rock. I look forward to listening to more.

I really could have posted a video for each song they are all so good.

#164 Sly & The Family Stone - Stand!

I had heard one or two of these songs previously but the whole album wasn't what I had expected. I thought the band was way more funk oriented, but they ended up being way more disco that what I thought it was going to be. Not terrible but not that good either.

#362 Ramones - Ramones

Speaking of punk, the Ramones might be the most popular and perhaps the most influential American punk bands ever. It was definitely more tolerable to listen to. The music is a little more refined and you can understand the singer. Two good starting points for punk. I wouldn't say that I loved the album but I didn't hate it either.

As a side note all four of the members adopted the last name of Ramone, even though none of them were related. The band played their final concert in 1996 and by 2014 all four of the original members of the band had died. One from lymphoma, heroin overdose, prostate cancer and bile duct cancer, the oldest being 56 at the time of their death.

#451 The Germs - GI

It feels like I have had to listen to a lot of punk music so far, and every time an albums starts up and I realize that it is going to be punk I think two things. 1. Please let it be better than most all of the other punk albums I've had to endure so far, or at least listenable and 2. hopefully the band is the same as most every other punk band and the songs are short and to the point so the album doesn't last too long. Well, this album was not better than the others, it might have been worse, mostly cause I had a hard time understanding what the singer was even saying, but it did end quickly, 15 songs and 29 minutes, short torture.

Just discovered that the band only lasted 3 years and only had one full album. Thank goodness.

#3 Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley

I am not an Elvis fan. I know there are millions of people that love him, his music, his movies, everything about him. They buy every re-release of repacked songs that have been released 20 times already and they have visited Graceland at least once. That's just not me. His music just doesn't connect with me. Do I think he had huge success and probably deservedly so, sure. He recorded a ton of albums and had a ton of hit songs, but I view him of more of a musician that was used by those around him as a huge marketing machine. Other people wrote his songs and he put his stamp on them and made them popular. Nothing wrong with that, it made him a lot of fame and wealth, his music just isn't for me.

#214 Faces - A Nod Is As Good As A Wink ... To A Blind Horse

So Faces started out as the band "Small Faces" but chanced their name after their lead singer quit the group. The new formation of the recruited Rod Stewart as lead singer and Ron Wood, of future Rolling Stones fame, on guitar, both from The Jeff Beck Group.

I quite liked the album. It is some really good rock/blues, and I have always like Rod Stewart's voice, one of the most unique in the business.

I remember when this album came out in 1984. It was insanely popular, and spawned the hits "What's Love Got to Do with It", "Show Some Respect", "Better Be Good to Me", and "Private Dancer". I didn't like it back then and I didn't like it listening to it again now. Just not my style.

#17 Sarah Vaughan - Sarah Vaughan at Mister Kelly's

I think this is the first female jazz singer to come up so far. The album was recorded live in one take at Mister Kelly's jazz club in Chicago, and really showcases he amazing voice. I don't love jazz but the album was really good, very easy listening. What I found to be pretty amazing is that between 1950 and 1987 she recorded 56 albums, ans that isn't including a number of live albums like this one

#879 Queens of the Stone Age - Queens of the Stone Age

Queens of the Stone Age (QotSA) are a pretty decent, kind of quirky rock band. I know more of their later albums, and like quite a bit of their music. It was interesting to go back and listen to their debut, which I had not previously heard, and get a feel for their origins. Their music has definitely evolved and become more refined and maybe you could say more radio friendly over time.

#892 Moby - Play

I remember when this album came out. The song "South side" was huge, and actually really really good. What I didn't know, after listening to the whole album, was that there are quite a few songs that were quite popular and also really good. What Moby does with this album I think is he avoids the trap a lot of electronica/techno music falls into and that is sounding repetitive. The songs were all different from each other and even the songs themselves didn't get repetitive and boring.

#546 Van Halen - 1984

One of the best rock albums to come out of the 80's, it spawned the hits "Jump" - another iconic song in my opinion, "Panama", "Hot For Teacher" and "I'll Wait". The Whole album is only 33 minutes long but it is a super fun 33 minutes. Eddie Van Halen is arguably one of the best guitar players ever and the bands incorporation of synthesizers on a rock album is just awesome.

Now if we can ever settle the argument
of which lead singer was better - David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar ...

#63 Fred Neil - Fred Neil

About all I could find out about Fred Neil was that he was a 60/70's folk singer that never acheived much commercial success with his music. As a boy he got interested in Dolphins and in the early 70's he basically retired from music and moved to Florida where he tried to help preserve as many Dolphins as he could. He did this until his death in 2001.

#708 Alice in Chains - Dirt

I like Alice In Chains a lot. I got introduced to them when their "Jar of Flies" album came out, and I decided to go back and listen to their older albums, which were in no way like Jar of Flies. In my opinion they are the best band to come out of the Seattle grunge scene of the 90's. It is too bad that the death of the lead singer Layne Staley due to drug overdose ended their run caue they were making some good music.

#233 The Bee Gees - Trafalgar

This is my first exposure to The Bee Gees other than "Staying Alive" from Saturday Night Fever, and I guess I was kind of expecting to get the same type of upbeat disco music on this album. Nope. This album is very subdued, and every song on the album could be classified as a ballad. I didn't love or hate the album, it was just good enough to keep me listening but not good enough to make me care about it.

#696 Metallica - Metallica

My favorite music genres, in order, are 80's dance/electronic/new wave, alt rock and heavy metal/hard rock. I have loved hard rock from a really early age when I started to listening to KISS, and my love for the genre continued but for a lot of years I really didn't have any favorites. Then one day I discovered an album called "...And Justice For All" and my love for heavy metal was re-ignited.

I love Metallica, they are probably my favorite heavy metal band although I do have others. There is nothing like playing one of their albums really loud. This album in-particular is really the band at their finest. All of the songs are really well crafted and the lyrics are amazing. Over the years the band continued to put out other awesome albums but I will admit their more recent ones don't live up to what they have previously produced.

If you ever need to be energized, just put this album on and crank it up.

"Enter Sandman"

BTW I have seen Metallica twice in concert and they are amazing. Would definitely go again if I get the chance.

#210 Don McLean - American Pie

There are some songs that are iconic. The Beatles and Elvis, to name a couple, have many such songs. Songs that, if you are over a certain age, you have heard it. I would argue that the song "American Pie" is one such song. Play the opening of the song and I bet that almost everyone has heard it, and knows the lyrics.

The Rest of the album was pretty good, but a tiny bit too folk-y for me. The lyric writing was top notch though.

By the way, until now, I haven't really been paying much attention to album covers, which can be an important part of the overall package, so I'm going to pay more attention to them. This is a great album cover!

"American Pie" - The day the music died, if you don't already know, is in reference to the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper.

I found a list by the Recording Industry Association of America. They had people vote on songs and came up with a list of 365 "Songs of the Century", not necessarily by American artists. It represents what I was talking about when I said "Iconic" songs. American Pie is #5 on the list. here is the link: http://www.theassociation.net/txt-music5.html

#831 The Cardigans - First Band on the Moon

There was a movie version Romeo and Juliet, staring Leonardo DiCaprio that came out quite awhile ago. It was a modern version of the story and was really quite good. I remember hearing a snippet of a song in the movie that left me wanting to hear the whole song. I ended up really liking the song but the band, in my opinion, is just a one hit wonder. The rest of the album was not very good and not worth listening too.

#575 Nanci Griffith - The Last of the True Believers

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Not a big fan of country. However if I had to listen to country this is a great example of a country album that I can tolerate. It's kinda slow, mellow, easy listening. Lyrically and musically it is sound, and I did really like the old school instruments. They did a great job incorporating some steel guitar, fiddle and slide guitar.
