#851 Robbie Williams - Life Thru a Lens

Robbie Williams came to fame in the English boy band "Take That" and this album is his first solo album and to be honest, while I never heard any of the bands music this sounds like a boy band album without the other boys. He did have a few hits later on and a couple that I liked but nothing on this album is really that great.

#774 Nirvana - MTV Unplugged in New York

It is kind of strange to me that Nirvana, a band that started the grunge movement, by creating huge in your face songs like “Smells like Teen Spirit” would agree to go on MTV Unplugged and play their songs stripped down, and that their fans would like it. Well maybe their fans didn’t but the critics sure did. I thought it was an interesting album and worked pretty well, although I’m not a big fan of bands redoing their songs as acoustic versions.

#720 Pearl Jam - Ten

There is a short list of bands that I can not stand to listen to. Pearl jam is on that list. I have listened to this album in the past and have even tried to like their music when it came out. I can’t do it. I just can’t stand Eddie Vedder’s voice and I hate how he kind of mumbles the lyrics and you can’t really tell what he is singing. It is so annoying. I’ll be honest because I have heard this album before and I know I don’t like it and I have no desire to subject myself to it again so I’m not goi g to listen to it. It is just to painful.

#241 Big Star - No 1 Record

This was a pretty good classic rock album. I have never heard of the band or any of the songs but it was straight forward, clean, tight, rock. Nothing over the top, nothing weird, but also nothing absolutely amazing either, and the first half of the album was stronger than the second half but any band that uses cow bell is alright by me.

#434 Gang of Four - Entertainment!

This album pretty good in an odd sort of way. It reminded me a lot of The Cure when they were first starting out. In fact this album, their debut, was released in 1979, the same year as The Cure’s first album “Three Imaginary Boys”. It’s kind of funny how two bands, both from England, can release very similar sounding albums and one have huge amounts of success, ie The Cure, and the other only have moderate success.

#529 Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones

I don’t really know what else to say about Mr. Waits.  I can tell he is a story teller with his songs but I just don’t get the message, and his voice is terrible. For me there wasn’t an enjoyable song on the album, well maybe the 2 instrumentals.

#1027 Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree

Out of all the albums I have listened to so far, there have been a few that I have thought are boring. This one is up there at the top in that regard. Just nothing interesting at all. I was not invested in any way and couldn't wait for it to end.

#580 Sonic Youth - Evol

I have enjoyed the previous Sonic Youth albums Dirty and Goo, especially Goo. It was awesome. This album however was a let down. The sound, the production, the lyrics and the vocals were all a mess. This album did come out 4 years prior to Goo, and it is only their third album,  so I’m going to chalk it up to the band finding their sound.

#218 Harry Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson

No idea who this guy was but the album was very entertaining. The vocals are spot on and he was, he died of a heart attack in 1994, very talented as a musician. A couple interesting things about him. In 1968 during an interview the Beatles were asked who their favorite American artist was and they said Nilsson, leading to a friendship between Lennon, McCartney and Nilsson. He was also one of the few artists that had commercial success but did not really tour or perform to support his releases, and in 1980 following the death of Lennon, he stepped away from music to focus on campaigning for gun control.

The Second half of the album was better especially the songs "Without You" "Coconut" and "Let the Good Times Roll" and if an artist only ever wrote those three songs you would have had an incredible amount of success. Unfortunately he only wrote "Coconut" the other two are cover versions, but still really good.

#717 Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Henry's Dream

Second album by the band and I’m still not a fan. It has to do with the writing I think. I think their songs are supposed to be telling a story, not necessarily a connected one from song to song, but at least each song is telling an individual story, but I don’t get the references. Besides that I didn’t find the band to be all that good.

#433 Fleetwood Mask - Tusk

Second Fleetwood Mac album and I'd bet that most people that are casual fans of the band probably aren't very familiar with it. There isn't a super strong hit single in my opinion, but still some good songs. Once again, the songs that Stevie Nicks is the lead singer, she is just head and shoulders better than the other members of the band, and they are good singers. Overall it was a good, but not amazing album.

#815 Dr. Octagon - Dr Octagonecologyst

I am far from qualified to evaluate rap music. I don’t listen to much of it and most of the rap albums so far I haven’t listened to because they contain a ton of explicit lyrics. So while this album doesn’t didn’t have an explicit language warning, some of the songs did have a couple f-bombs, and I was able to make my way through it. I can’t really say if it was good or bad. I didn’t like it but like I said I’m not an expert on rap, and it may actually be a great album.

#188 Neil Young - After the Gold Rush

While I have really enjoyed all of the other Neil Young albums so far I felt a little bit let down by this one. It was the songs themselves. They weren’t as well written as the songs on the other albums in my opinion. Still, it was better than a lot of the albums I’ve listened to so far.

#396 Blondie - Parallel Lines

This album is a little bit before my time. When it came out I wasn't quite into music so i wasn't exposed to it. Of course I have heard most of the bands hit songs, two of which are on this album, but for all of the hype and acclaim that the band has received over the decades, I honestly expected the entire album to be much much better. Other than the two hits I didn't think it was very good at all.

#1034 Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca

This is one of those albums that, in my opinion, is too weird to be good. I know that that is the reason that a lot of people would think it is good, because it isn't mainstream, cookie cutter music. I don't want all the music I listen to, to sound the same but there is a line that when it gets too out there I just don't enjoy it. To me it always comes across as the person or band is trying too hard to be different. To each their own I guess.

#425 Van Halen - Van Halen

I'm a big Van Halen fan, and when a band produces an album like this as their debut album, it is no surprise why they ending up becoming one of the biggest rock bands of all time. This album is further proof that Eddie Van Halen is one of the mist talented guitar players ever. Unfortunately the band is also an example of egos getting the better of them and not being able to keep it together. Eddie's ego and controlling of the band lead to David Lee Roth leaving and even though they had further success with Sammy Hagar he also left due to disputes with the Eddie.

Kind of more of the same. I remember listening to a couple other albums of her's and this was very very similar in style. Even the songs on the album all sound very similar to each other. It does have her most popular, and I would even venture to say one of the most well know songs ever.

#485 Heaven 17 - Penthouse and Pavement

Listening to this album it is very obviously an early 80’s new wave synth album. One of the first things that I though was that the band reminds me of Human League. Well sure enough two of the members founded Human League and then had a falling out and left and formed this band. The albuM was pretty good but not as good as anything that I have ever heard by Human League.

I was intrigued by the title of the album. Who is John Barleycorn and why must he die? Well all I can say is listening to the album and the song of the same name I have no idea why. #765 Hole - Live Through This

Strangely enough the timing for me listening to this album on today of all days when it could have been any other day is so weird. This album was released exactly 25 years ago today. How odd is that. When it was released it was insanely popular. It is pretty good for a early 90’s grunge album, probably one of the better ones released during that time period. However Courtney Love is just not that good of a singer, but when you are in a grunge band I guess you don’t really have to be that good. And it is probably the reason why she has never done anything else.

#1019 LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver

Its been awhile since there has been a electronic/tech album come up. That's what I thought I was getting anyways, having never listened to the band before. I was expecting an album of music that was repetitive and where all the songs end up sounding the same. I was wrong. While musically it had an electronic sound to it, it was much more, and there was singing which was a plus. It actually ended up being a pretty enjoyable album. My only complaint was that some of the songs were 6+ minutes long and started to drag on.

#900 The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs

Most of these songs were pretty simplistic and cheesy, well the ones I listened to anyways. I listened to as many as I could on my way home from work which, because most of the songs are about 1 to 2 minutes in length, I was able to get through 20 something if them. Unless you are my absolute favourite band I’m just not taking the time to listened to an album of 69 songs.

Never having listened to James Brown, and really only knowing him for “I Got You (I Feel Good)”, which isn’t on this album by the way, you can tell, being a live album, that he would have been a great entertainer. The crowd are screaming for him like crazy. The songs were the best musically, lyrically they are a bit lacking and vocal he isn’t amazing but like I said the combination of everything all together, especially his showmanship makes it fun to listen to.

#715 Ministry - Psalm 69

Musically I liked the album. I'm always up for some good, loud metal, even if it was a tiny bit too much industrial for my taste, it was still good. Were it fell apart for me was the vocals. They were too growlie, too screamy, and too weird. I know those aren't real words but they describe the vocals.

#1055 David Bowie - The Next Day

A while back I reviewed David Bowie's last album, Darkstar. Recorded just before his death and released right before he passed, He recorded it knowing he was going to die. It turned out to be a great album, probably my favorite album of his. This album is his second to last, recorded 3 years before his death, it was not as good. A couple of the song were decent but as a whole I didn't like it as much as Darkstar and definitely don't think it is even in the top 5 of his albums.

It was only about a week ago that I listened to The Divine Comedy's album that was released after this one. I liked it but this one was terrible. In fact it was so different than the other one I thought maybe I had made a mistake on the other one and maybe it wasn't as good as I had thought. So, I went back and re-listened to it, and my opinion didn't change much. It was maybe not quite as good as I thought but still not bad, and my opinion of this one didn't change either. Still terrible. The lyrics were the downfall of the album. Just bad.

#577 Peter Gabriel - So

Another great album by Peter Gabriel. He has become an artist that I really enjoy listening to. The songs are really great, and while the 2 hits, and they were really huge hits, are kind of commercial and geared towards radio, the rest of the album is very thoughtful, and I think he is a very underrated singer. Such a great voice.

#576 Paul Simon - Graceland

I have never listened to this album before, however I had it in my mind that it was a huge album for Paul and for that reason it must have been really good. I mean "You Can Call Me Al" was a huge song when it came out. I have enjoyed other albums of his, they are usually pretty mellow and this one is not a lot different from that formula, however the songs were not really that good and really the hit song was about the only stand out. Wow just looking up the album on wikipedia and it won album of the year. Definitely not that good of an album.

#858 The Divine Comedy - A Short Album About Love

I liked this album. The band falls into the genre of chamber pop which means that the music they create is very full, with a lot of melodies and textures. Often times the songs include the use of orchestral type instruments including horns and large string arrangements. Because of this I really was drawn into the music first and then the message of the songs. It was a pretty great album.

#805 The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness

Not many bands will attempt a double album. Mostly because it is difficult to produce that man songs to make the album good from start to finish. This album is one of the good ones. It starts out with an orchestral instrumental and then flows from hard hitting rock songs to airy ballads to pop hits. A couple of the songs are weak, but for a 28 songs album for it to be only a couple songs it's pretty impressive. It really pushed the band into superstar status, and produced some of the bands best songs.
