#730 Barry Adamson - Oedipus Schmoedipus

I was surprised by this album. I had no idea who Barry Adamson was before listening to this. Turns out he is an instrumentalist who makes songs that fuse funk, rock, jazz and blues. Most of the songs on the album are instrumentals that are pretty catchy and definitely funky. One of the songs "Miles" I assume is an ode to Miles Davis. Another song "it's business as usual" was very odd and if a song could make you feel how a horror movie does this is it. Overall it was a pretty good album and was worth a listen. 3.5/5 for originality.

This song from the album, "something wicked this way comes", reminded me of a song my mom had the 45 of that I would listen to as a kid called "Spooky" by The Zombies.

I also discovered that Barry also remixes other bands songs, including one of my favorites bands, Depeche Mode.

Useless (escape from wherever parts 1&2):

#747 Super Furry Animals - Fuzzy Logic

This album was fun to listen to, and with song titles like "Fuzzy Birds" "hometown unicorn" and "if you don't want me to destroy you" why shouldn't it be. Most of the songs were pretty upbeat and a little silly. Catchy little songs that kept me wanting to listen to see what they would come up with next. Overall I liked the album and I'm interested to see if they have another album on the list to listen to.

4/5 for not being serious and still making good music.

New Music

Three pretty good songs came out today. check 'em out:

#100 Jeff Beck - Truth

Jeff Beck is a guitar player from England who got his start in a band called The Yardbirds. This album was his first as a solo artist and was released in 1968. Truth was really good. It definitely had a late 60s early 70s flare to it with some pretty awesome blues thrown in for good measure. A couple of the songs are instrumental to showcase his guitar skills, while the others feature a singer recruited by Jeff for the album. He was also able to recruit some pretty heavy hitters from the rock world to play on the album; Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, Ronnie wood of The Rolling Stones and Keith Moon from The Who. I can understand why this was included on the list. For a debut album it was quite impressive and I found myself really enjoying listening to it. 5/5 for combining rock and blues into some truly good songs.

Bonus points if anyone can name the singer on the album, without googling it :)

#387 The Saints - Eternally Yours

Two punk albums in a row. Released in 1974, the same year yesterday's band The Fall formed, this album was soooo much better. This is way more what I expected from a punk album. The singer still couldn't really sing all that well but that was ok because the music was harder and much more interesting. The lyrics were better crafted and actually made sense. I can totally see this band having an influence on other bands that would come along later. 4/5 For being what I expected out of a punk band.

Song of the Day (SotD): Matthew Good - Bad Guys Win

Always love it when some new Matt Good comes out. Great song!

#507 - The Fall - This Nation's Saving Grace

Soooo, were back. Formed in 1974 The Fall are a punk-rock band from England. Over the years they have gone through many line-up changes and have release something like 29 albums. Fans of the band consider this album their best. if that is the case I'm glad I haven't listened to the others. It wasn't that good, and it's not that I have anything against punk. I actually like some of it in short doses. The Fall were pretty typical in the sense that the singer can't really sing all that well, and most of the lyrics are angsty political etc. The downfall in my opinion is that the music was pretty rudimentary and redundant and not much attempt was made to make the lyrics rhyme or make sense. In fact there is a couple songs of the singer just kind of mumbling to the music and saying random words. 1/5 for using the word retard in your song.

Their "hit" song L.A.

Resurrection

Ok so I have the need/desire to expand my musical interests again. So I am going to resurrect a project I started working on back in 2011. At the time I had heard of a book called "1001 albums to hear before you die" and decided I was going to listen to a random album each day and write about them on a blog. I listened to 93 of them before life got too busy with school and the blog got ignored. So I am going to start it back up again. Here is how it works:

I have updated the list to be the 2016 edition which has some additions from 2013 to 2016 and also took out some older albums.

I'm going to try to randomly listen to one album a day and write a short review of it. With streaming apps it is so much easier to get the albums to listen to now vs. 6 years ago. I'll be using Apple Music to listen to them.

At times I may also add in random posts of songs I have heard recently and liked, a review of a new album that has come out, video from a concert I have attended or maybe even interesting things going on in the world of music.

I apologize if you happen to go back and read older posts and links to YouTube videos that I included no longer work. I didn't account for that.

Hopefully it is of interest to people. Please feel free to add comments to any of the posts.
