#616 Dinasaur Jr. - Bug

I wasn't super impressed by this album. It was a little too messy, and under produced, which I understand is probably what they were going for but I didn't like it. Even the lead singer of the band says it is his least favorite Dinosaur Jr. album.

#65 Nina Simone - Wild is the Wind

Nina Simone is another example of an artist from the 50's and 60's just putting out a ton of albums. Between 1958 and 1974 Nina released 40 albums. Granted many of them are live albums but still that is an impressive feat.

As for this album most of it was pretty laid-back, easy listening jazz, which was pretty good. One of those albums that you can just put on in the back ground and chill out listening to it.

#945 Beck - Sea Change

This was very different that what I thought it was going to be like. The few beck songs I have heard in the past were definitely more dance or electronic oriented. This album had much more of a slowed down, country vibe to it. Overall I didn't mind listening to it and I don't think this is what you would get if you listened to other Beck albums.

#293 Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstasy

The last of the Steely Dan albums and I can't say that I am depressed about that. There have been 4 on the list and I haven't really enjoyed any of them, mostly because they just aren't my style of music and for one of the albums at least it was really long and drawn out.

This is the band's second album and once again I was in the middle of the road on it. It wasn't amazing but I didn't hate it either.

"Bodhisattva"

I included that song just so I had an excuse to include another song with the same name, which happens to be one of my favorites

"Bodhisattva" - Holy Barbarians

#232 The Beach Boys - Surf's Up

This album had none of the bands signature sound on it, and with songs about being go to your feet and what it is like to be a tree, it was just not good. Pass on this one.

#660 Spacemen 3 - Playing with Fire

This was a weird album, and my guess is that the band members did a lot of drugs while writing and recording it. Not really my style.

#57 The Byrds - Mr. Tamborine Man

The bands debut album it contains probably their most famous song, the title track of the album, which just happens to have been written by Bob Dylan. It was probably the bright spot of the album.

#918 Madonna - Music

Album 2 of 3 from Madonna, and it wasn't that good. I say that not because I don't like her music, I think it is ok and she has had some good songs, but because the year it was recorded, 2000, was when artists were starting to dabble into using autotune on their voice. It is a practice that I really don't like and for the most part ruins a song. The album did have a couple decent songs on it but wasn't as good as I hoped it would be.

#850 Radiohead - OK Computer

There is nothing that I can say at this point about Radiohead that I haven't said before, or that is going to make someone like the band any more than they already might. If you haven't listened to this album, or the band, before I suggest you do. It is one of their best and I think you won't be disappointed.

"Paranoid Android"

"Karma Police"

Only one more Radiohead album to come, Amnesia. I'm a little surprised that Pablo Honey, their debut album, was not included in the list. It has some really great songs on it. So as an added bonus I've included some here.

"Creep"

"Stop Whispering"

"Anyone Can Play Guitar" - one of my favorites

#371 David Bowie - Low

Alright Mr. Bowie, I'm trying to understand your albums but I'm having a hard time. I have listened to a couple of your albums so far for this blog, 4 more to go, and I am always coming to the same conclusion. As a whole, in my opinion, your albums are not very good. They seem to fall apart on the second half of the album, and the really, really good songs are the singles that get released. Don't get my wrong your hits are really really good, but apart from that I haven't really enjoyed the other songs. To make matters worse for this album, is that there is no apparent "hit" on the album. The album opens with an instrumental, and then out of the 11 songs six of them are instumentals, including the last 5 songs on the album. In my mind this is a copout. Overall this album just didn't do it for me.

#1057 Beyonce - Beyonce

Much to my surprise I actually liked this album. I didn't think there was any chance of that considering that I rarely like this style of music, but it was really entertaining. The Songs were well written, Beyonce has a great voice and although some of the songs incorporate rap it was kept to a good amount, it wasn't overboard.

New Music - Demob Happy

Riley and I went to the Nothing But Thieves concert last night, who are an amazing band in their own right and I already knew that I was going to like them, but who I was really impressed with was the opening band - Demob Happy.

Waiting in line to get in we decided to look up who was opening for NBT, and discovered it was actually two openers, Demob and Grandson. Normally I am not a big fan of two openers, mostly because by the time the band that you are there to see finally comes on you have been standing on a concrete floor for a number of hours and because I find that openers are usaully a band that you have never heard of and are just kind whatever. Opening bands typically have a hard time getting the crowd into their music because no one knows any of it and so everyone just kind of stands there and claps after each song is done. Well last night definitely the exception to the rule.

Demob Happy, from Newcastle, England, came out first at 7:30, which was much appreciated, and they had everyone into their music right from the start. Their music is super-loud, alt-rock with a bit of a 70's vibe thrown in. They actually remind me a little of Queens of the Stone Age. They were very energetic and very entertaining, playing song after song of in your face rock. I was super impressed with them and feel like show that they gave was good enough to be a headlining show for sure. I would have been happy to listen to them for much longer than the 1/2 hour that they played. After the concert was over I was able to talk to them for a few minutes at the merchandise stand and they were all very nice. I would definitely see them again if they ever come back.

"Be Your Man"

"Dead Dreamers"

"Loosen It"

The second opener was Grandson, who is a musician originally from Toronto, but now based in L.A I would classify him as very similar in style to Rage Against the Machine, as his music is very socially-concious rap-rock. I think he is more popular that Demob, since he has had some radio success here in the US. Once again he was super entertaining and had the crowd in to his music from the first minute.

"Blood // Water"

After Grandson it was NBT, who, even though I had never seen them before, were as good as I expected them to be. All around it was a great concert from start to finish.

Wow, wow, wow. This album was awesome. I know that there are probably a ton of people out there that already know this but I had no idea. It is just really entertaining from start to finish. Absolutely worth a listen if you alt-rock.

#69 The Beatles - Revolver

The fifth Beatles album that I have listened to so far, and the band's seventh album released, and while it is not the band's best selling album, that title belongs to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, it is, from what I have read, in most people's opinion the band's best album. I can see why many feel that way. I still don't think it was amazing, but that has to do with biases that I have towards their music. It was good howver, maybe the best I have heard so far, It has a handful of great songs on it and really showcased the vocal capabilities of all members of the band, as they each take a turn on lead vocals for different songs.

"Eleanor Rigby" McCartney on vocals. A great song.

"Yellow Submarine" Starr on vocals.

"Got to Get You into My Life" McCartney

"Paperback Writer" The writing session for Revolver spawned another songs not included on th album but released as a single it became very popular.

#1031 TV on the Radio - Dear Science

Two albums in a row that I really liked. TV on the Radio is a relatively new band, they formed in 2001, and has released a number of albums in that time. Their sound is mostly Alt-rock, but there are a lot of different elements that the band mixes into their songs that make the album very unique. I liked a lot of the songs on the album and definitely think it is worth a listen.

BTW the title of the album comes from a note that a band member wrote that said "Dear Science, please start solving problems and curing diseases or shut the F up"

"Golden Age"

#495 X - Wild Gift

I really liked this album. X is a punk band from the 80's, and while this is a punk album, it is really well produced. Instead of the normal loud, disjointed songs of a punk album, this was much tighter. That's not to say it is without it's flaws, but because it was so fun to listen to, it was easier to overlook them.

#606 Terence Trent D'Arby - Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'arby

It is too bad that Terence Trent D'Arby never really had much success other than this album and really only the three singles released from the album. I have really always liked his voice and think that he is a really good singer. After listening to the album as a whole really the only good songs are the three singles. By the way D'arby still records albums but if you want to find his music he changed his name to Sananda Maitreya in 2001.
