I'm a big Van Halen fan, and when a band produces an album like this as their debut album, it is no surprise why they ending up becoming one of the biggest rock bands of all time. This album is further proof that Eddie Van Halen is one of the mist talented guitar players ever. Unfortunately the band is also an example of egos getting the better of them and not being able to keep it together. Eddie's ego and controlling of the band lead to David Lee Roth leaving and even though they had further success with Sammy Hagar he also left due to disputes with the Eddie.
"Runnin' With the Devil"
Tomorrow's Album #1034 Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
Kind of more of the same. I remember listening to a couple other albums of her's and this was very very similar in style. Even the songs on the album all sound very similar to each other. It does have her most popular, and I would even venture to say one of the most well know songs ever.
Another Doors album and once again I hate it. It is not mild disdain or dislike, I hate their music, and I don't understand why or how anyone could like them. It is everything that I hate about 60's music.
"Light My Fire"
Tomorrow's Album #952 Jurassic 5 - Power in Numbers
Listening to this album it is very obviously an early 80’s new wave synth album. One of the first things that I though was that the band reminds me of Human League. Well sure enough two of the members founded Human League and then had a falling out and left and formed this band. The albuM was pretty good but not as good as anything that I have ever heard by Human League.
I listened to the band's second album a while back, and I hated it. The writing was terrible. Well this album was no better and maybe worse. Completely terrible.
"We Rule the School"
Tomorrow's Album #343 Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive
Another entertaining album from the duo. Short and to the point song with simple lyrics and music but with just enough hook to want to keep you listening. What’s with the name of the album though, just dumb.
Another pretty good album from the band. Once again it really reminds me of the band Underworld, both musically and vocally. Definitely better than the last one that I review a few weeks ago. Really catchy and worth a listen.
"Heartland"
Tomorrow's Album #67 Simon & Garfunkel - Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme
Once I was able to get past the 20 minute long first song the rest of the album was not good. While the songs were shorter they still were not my cup of tea.
An English late-80’s band like The Stone Roses, I never really got into their music. I tried one upon a time to listen to this album, because it got so much hype when it came out, but I didn’t really like it. And I still don’t now.
“Loose Fit”
Tomorrow's Album #213 Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Tarkus
I was intrigued by the title of the album. Who is John Barleycorn and why must he die? Well all I can say is listening to the album and the song of the same name I have no idea why. He must have done something though. As for the album I found it to be pretty slow and boring. Nothing really to rave about.
“Empty Pages”
Tomorrow's Album #670 Happy Mondays - Pills N Thrills and Bellyaches
Strangely enough the timing for me listening to this album on today of all days when it could have been any other day is so weird. This album was released exactly 25 years ago today. How odd is that. When it was released it was insanely popular. It is pretty good for a early 90’s grunge album, probably one of the better ones released during that time period. However Courtney Love is just not that good of a singer, but when you are in a grunge band I guess you don’t really have to be that good. And it is probably the reason why she has never done anything else.
“Miss World”
Tomorrow's Album #46 Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto
Its been awhile since there has been a electronic/tech album come up. That's what I thought I was getting anyways, having never listened to the band before. I was expecting an album of music that was repetitive and where all the songs end up sounding the same. I was wrong. While musically it had an electronic sound to it, it was much more, and there was singing which was a plus. It actually ended up being a pretty enjoyable album. My only complaint was that some of the songs were 6+ minutes long and started to drag on.
Most of these songs were pretty simplistic and cheesy, well the ones I listened to anyways. I listened to as many as I could on my way home from work which, because most of the songs are about 1 to 2 minutes in length, I was able to get through 20 something if them. Unless you are my absolute favourite band I’m just not taking the time to listened to an album of 69 songs.
“The Book of Love”
Tomorrow's Album #1019 LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
Never having listened to James Brown, and really only knowing him for “I Got You (I Feel Good)”, which isn’t on this album by the way, you can tell, being a live album, that he would have been a great entertainer. The crowd are screaming for him like crazy. The songs were the best musically, lyrically they are a bit lacking and vocal he isn’t amazing but like I said the combination of everything all together, especially his showmanship makes it fun to listen to.
“Try Me”
Tomorrow's Album #152 Johnny Cash - Johnny Cash at San Quentin
I was really surprised by this album. I had no idea or did I expect that it would be this good. It was a great pop album. The song writing was awesome and then you through in some 80’s musical elements and a singer with some Elton John and Robbie Williams influence and it was just very entertaining.
“Take Your Mama”
“Filthy/Gorgeous”
Tomorrow's Album #35 James Brown - Live at the Apollo
Musically I liked the album. I'm always up for some good, loud metal, even if it was a tiny bit too much industrial for my taste, it was still good. Were it fell apart for me was the vocals. They were too growlie, too screamy, and too weird. I know those aren't real words but they describe the vocals.
A while back I reviewed David Bowie's last album, Darkstar. Recorded just before his death and released right before he passed, He recorded it knowing he was going to die. It turned out to be a great album, probably my favorite album of his. This album is his second to last, recorded 3 years before his death, it was not as good. A couple of the song were decent but as a whole I didn't like it as much as Darkstar and definitely don't think it is even in the top 5 of his albums.
I couldn't remember the first Roxy Music album, and when I went back and re-read what I had thought of it it is no surprise. It was pretty much forgettable, but this one was better. It still wasn't amazing but it was a pretty decent rock album.
It was only about a week ago that I listened to The Divine Comedy's album that was released after this one. I liked it but this one was terrible. In fact it was so different than the other one I thought maybe I had made a mistake on the other one and maybe it wasn't as good as I had thought. So, I went back and re-listened to it, and my opinion didn't change much. It was maybe not quite as good as I thought but still not bad, and my opinion of this one didn't change either. Still terrible. The lyrics were the downfall of the album. Just bad.
"Something for the Weekend"
Tomorrow's Album #889 Les Rhythmes Digitales - Darkdancer
